From what I have been reading seems that the lights can turn on due to a small host of problems ranging from bad o2 sensors to a dirty MAF sensor. I took my vehicle to Autozone and the guy told me that I had 3 different codes. P0102, P0430, and P0420. still looking up info on them. any one out there run across these?

Yeah that seems rather odd, From what I have read, if your check engine light comes on it should normally generate a code. Let me know what happens.

04 T4R V6 2WD

I just had the "check engine" light come on...along with the "VSC Trac" and "Trac Off". Long story short, I cleaned my mass airflow sensor per someone comment on aftermarket CAI with oil build-up and residue. Well, mine had some residue on it which I cleaned with a q-tip and some "electronics cleaner" from Radio Shack. After cleaning, I started her up and the light was still on...bummer. I started it up a second time a lil bit later and it was gone. Woo!!! Hopefully it stays that way.

Hope this helps somebody. Later.

All:

Finially got tired of trying the home remedys and took it to the dealer the other day.....

They diagnosed it as a 'Yaw sensor failure' ...... they reset it and now I'm up and running without VSC lights! .... 4Runner was under warranty so no charge! Took all of a 1/2 hour .......

So if anyone has a similar problem see if the dealer can handle it no charge under warranty!

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Learned a lot about my Toyota!

Joe

My codes seem to indicate bad o2 emissions crap. By the way HPK, disconnect your battery to reset your check engine light.

P0102=MAF sensor
Clean it but do not touch it with anything, just spray it every 30,000 miles with electrical/MAF cleaner and not brake cleaner.

Even after the issue is identified and resolved the check engine light does not immediately go off after resolving the issue like earlier Toyota models. It can take several driving cycles to clear the error codes or you can disconnect the battery to clear the codes and check engine light.

3 years later

I'm back with the same problem. My check engine light is on with the VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF lights on as well. Do these sensors go bad every few years?

Mine has come on a second time as well, about 6 months after i reset it. I talked to my friend who work for a Toyota dealership as a mechanic, he said its hard to say what is causing it unless you can get the error code. Other wise just reset it again.

Hmm, it's coming onto 3 years since one of mine failed. Hopefully it won't present a problem. Although the other 3 have been running just fine since I bought the truck... The O2 sensors are not in a very hospitable environment so I'd say I wouldn't be suprised it fails again. On another note, the O2 sensors in my old celica never failed since I owned it.
