Unhappy Odd Clunk

I am a new member but long time 4Runner owner. We bought a 1998 off the showroom floor. We now have 108,000 very satisfied miles on it. This year it developed a noise (only in cold weather, and after it has been sitting for a small period of time). When the car is placed into gear and accelerator depressed, it does not move (like the brake is applied). Then a loud "clunk" and it moves. This continues to repeat itself at each stop & go until the car has warmed.
We have had the car to local shop but the could not find anything.

Help !

How cold are we talkin'? If it's below freezing it might be frozen brakes. I would also check your trans fluid level and condition.

Almost freezing. Tranny fluid is good. Have you heard of this before?

I agree with drmorb....do you set your pking brake? If so (assuming you can do so safely) leave it off for the evening (maybe block your tires) and see if that is the problem.
