Many have had it... Know that a simple check engine light (is the gas cap tight?) will trip the rest of the lights. Read here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...threadid=32818

Check Engine Light, VSC TRAC and VSC/OFF Light

I just picked up my 2001 4runner after having the transmission changed and now I have the same three lights that seem to plague every 4runner owner sometiem or another. Is this standard when a transmission is changed.

Is the transmission repair shop responsible for ensuring the vehicle is returned to the owner ready to drive without the pesky lights?

Also, my car is now running in Limp Mode and I was able to watch my gas gauge drop faster than the balance in my checking account.

Now What?

I’m just a novice so you’ll want more info/input, but I had a similar situation (see this thread: Check engine light turned off by itself... what to do?)

In short, I would suggest you find out what code the car is “throwing”. You will need a code reader to do that. A shop can also do this but I have heard some places will do it for free (auto zone?). In my case I was told that it was the exhaust manifold/cat converter which was triggering a sensor and throwing codes. Though the first time this happened it was the engine misfiring and flooding the #1 cylinder (though I doubt that’s your problem because you didn’t mention other issues such as the car shaking).
In short, my guess is it could be any number of things, which the car/computer may be able to tell you.

Hope that helps

I had that problem two months ago. Tried the gas cap trick and every suggestion I could find without a fix. Took it to my local mechanic who found mice had eaten through my wire harness.

Hope its not the same costly problem, but throwing out another option for ya to freak out about!
