Also, let me know if any of the part numbers are incorrect or updated/replaced by Toyota. I'll do my best to keep the OP current.

Does anybody know if it is ok to drive with bad rear differential?
I just changed oil and it had A LOT of metal shavings.
It makes constant noise when driving, which dissapears when shifting to neutral.

Notice the golden color of the oil when I was draining it in the video:

Your video link doesn't work.

Is it ok to drive with a bad dif? Not really. You run the risk of being stranded somewhere or having your rear wheels lock up while doing 70 on the highway. You'll also put other drivers in danger because a blown dif will throw metal and gear lube everywhere on the road.

Just did mine a few days ago, thanks to this thread it went flawless.
Followed all the advice here.
Soaked all plugs with PB Blaster for 2 days, did the changes the 3rd day, no problems.
A few probably too obvious notes:
Since I dropped the spare to do the rear diff (as recommended here and excellent advice), it gave me a chance to inspect, clean, and check the pressure on the spare as I just bought this 2 months ago. 7lbs!
Probably never touched since the car was new (2003).
So a great opportunity to kill 2 birds and put air in the spare.
Also, I don't do anything underneath without a cardboard box opened up to catch any spillage and to lie on.
I actually didn't lose anything on the driveway from the diffs or transfer, but did when I removed the stinkin' oil filter!
I didn't need to use any jackstands, was able to access everything with the car flat on the ground.
Rear diff was dirty and disgusting, transfer and front diff not too terribly bad.

Big thanks to everyone in this thread. Just did the diff and transfer case fluids. Everything went smoothly. Was afraid the front differential bolts would be a pain with living in the rust belt, but they came out easily. I did jack up the front end slightly to loosen the bolts, then lowered it back down to drain and fill.

Did this today and all went well and very easy to do. Thanks OP for this great write up. It didn't look as bad as I thought it would at 60k miles, but I wanted to have it done before my drive home for thanksgiving. Thanks again!!

Great post. I did the oil change recently on my 4Runner and had a huge problem with the front diff drain plug. It was seized so badly that I rounded it with the hex. I tried several days spaying it and hammer/chisel .
Then I drove to the shop to weld a hex key to the socket .. but they refused being afraid that oil could burn in the heating process.
Came back to the garage and tried again to loose the plug with a chisel and a hammer. I finally succeeded. Here is the picture of the tools.

Do you guys check the oil level some time after replacing? If yes do you use new gaskets for fill plugs again?

Yea, I checked it and it was perfect (I won't check it next time after change). Reuse crush washer because it sits above oil level most of the time anyway.

Picked up the fluid yesterday and ordered all new drain and fill plugs with new crush washers today. Great thread.

Thank you,
Bill

Great thread! Thank you so much!!!!

I plan on doing this this week.

My only question is... Do I need the LSD additive in the rear differential of my 03 sport 4x4 V6?

No right? I do not have a Limited Slip Differential?

Just want to be 100%

Thanks
