All About Oil

In my opinion the Oil Bible is full of crap. It is really about a company that sells a product and thinks it is Ok to go 25,000 miles between oil changes and the product they push is not even certified.

By the way, I still follow the "myth of the 3,000 mile oil change".
 
That study might be crap or might not, but I learned one thing switching to synthetic is worth it. Also it proved some things that I already knew about oil. Well anyway, I find it helpfull.

Yeah, I may of been a bit harsh. It does have some good points. And I did switch to synthetic myself in the 4Runner, although I use Mobil 1. I now change the oil every 5,000 miles which I guess is a little over kill. I just find using oil for 25,000 miles and changing the filter in between is pushing it. Once I found out it was done by Amosil I thought they have a vested interest in the out come.

I personally see nothing wrong going 7,500 miles on PAO (polyalphaolefins) synthetic oil.
 
There have been a ton of threads regarding this subject on this forum. I personally use Mobil 1, and change oil about every 7500 miles.
 
I'm switching to Mobil-1 synthetic @ 11,000 mile mark. I figure that should be plenty time for internals to sit in by then. With exeption of first oil change @ 1,000 mile mark, all other I do @ 5,000 each including filter (by the book).
 
Deal on Mobil-1?

Is this a good deal? At this price should I stock up? And here's an elementary question, but I'll ask anyway...Does oil have a limited shelf life?

The way you are caring for your 4runner you will get bored driving it before you will ever have a oil related problem. Someone some day will benefit from your care and will enjoy driving your used 4runner :)

Personally I have the dealer change mine every 3750-4000 miles, they use Castrol GTX (good dino oil) when the warranty is up (60K miles) I will switch to Mobil 1 10w30 and run it for 7500 miles and have a local shop I know do it. Hell I might even do it myself :)

6 month seem like a long time for dyno oil, that's the reason I'll use synthetic. Changing it on my own twice a year does not sound like an overkill.
 
guys oil is the life blood of your engine. After 15 years of automotive experience i run mobil one in my runner. now grant it i put 300-350 miles a week on my truck (or 18K a year). If you use mineral oil and change it every 3000 miles the engine will last forever and cost a max of $25.00 per service. As I said I run mobile one and i go a max of 4000 miles on changes with factory filters......remember OIL is the life of your engine change it as often as possible. Its the cheapest insurance you can give your engine.

Boy am I in trouble. I buy cases of oil when it is on sale. I keep it for years.

Here are a few links from a oil forum about shelf life. From that forum the general answer is 4 years for conventional oil and 10 for Mobil 1.

This article has a few facts and alot of speculation right off the top of the writers head.
This makes the work appear credible. Well it isn't, when he recommend a the legendery
Franz toilet paper filter, my jaw dropped. Toilet paper was made for your backside not for oil.
I owned a motor shop in the days when Franz was around(he has since disappeared) and
almost every motor that his filter was installed on was clogged up with paper fuzz
which destroyed the motor. I had many motors through my shop that suffered this fate.
Did Franz ever pay for the damage, no, he just disappeared to dodge the judgements.

The Amsoil bypass filter is the same that was abandoned in the 50's by ALL car manufacturers.

As far as oil change intravals, Ford started the 6 months 6000 mile, interval in 1963.
Today, the API rating is so tight that all the oils a virtually the same. GM has a oil change
interval that gives a light on your panel when the change is due, it is generated by the
engine computer and reflects the drivers driving habits.

The fast lube outfits are there to sell product, the more product the more profit.
The same for the parts houses.

The real truth is that vehicles a built far more reliable and maintainence free today.
100,000 mile plug changes, lifetime auto trans lube, lifetime anti-freeze, no lube chassis.
This cuts down on the parts sales so the only profit center is changing oil.

Here is the answer from Mobil 1 technical guy :

"If the bottle is kept in a somewhat controlled climate and unopened it is about 5 years. If the container is opened it is approximately 1 year"
 
Wow that is great. Do you do 2 or 3 purchases at a time or do you have to go back to get more. Anyway I have only done one purchase, but I am tempted to do quite a few more at Pep Boys.
