I believe the OEM Toyota 0W-20 oil is already a full synthetic (based on readings I've done at BITOG). That said, as long as you are using a 0W-20 motor oil, you can use whatever you want -- I would definitely recommend synthetic, though.

My 10,000 Mile Oil Change Results

Here is my Blackstone Labs report from my last oil change (approximately 9,500 miles on the oil).

I used Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy (AFE) with none added during the interval. I was a little nervous about going so long without an oil change and was really wondering if Mobil 1 could stand up to it -- if it was close I was going to switch to Amsoil Signature 0W-20.

I do need to order some new Amsoil oil filters -- they're expensive, but at least they give you their filtration ratings. I had to get an STP filter for the time being.

Looks like it will be 10,000 mile OCI with Mobil 1 AFE 0W-20 and Amsoil filter for me!

thanks for your 10K mile oil analysis . just did my 7K mile oil change and I would agree 10K miles is a good time to do it.. @7K miles same oil that you use engine was exactly at the full mark on stick and the oil was slightly darker than new.

Cut open the oil filter and the pleats were still clean , toyota filters.

next oil change will be 10K miles mobil 1 0-20wt advanced ..

My 2000 4Runner SR5 3.4L-v6 4x4 - got its first oil change (last week), since purchasing it 1-3/4 years ago @ 8,000 Km = 5,000 mile interval.
- now speedometer at 138,000 Km / 85,700 miles
a) Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Synthetic 5w-30 / made from clean Natural Gas base stock
b) WIX XP Platinum Synthetic media filter / PS - the longer filter wouldn't thread on, so went with the shorter version
c) AMSOIL Synthetic Racing Grease, used on all the numerous jerks
d) finally Dimple Magnets / drain pan plug bolt & on filter case end

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I only use Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum (Yellow Jug now) & new WIX XP Platinum syn. filter.
- I've never used extended mileage oil
- used the above in my RAV4-v6 4x4, 2000 4Runner SR5 3.4L-v6 4x4 and a 1998 Silverado 5.7L 4x4
- plus John Deere garden tractors (318 & GT262), other small engines, etc.

Last time used AMSOIL Racing grease, on Gen3 driveshafts.
- will switch to RedLine Synthetic Grease, next order: https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...0402/overview/

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wife's 3.5L-v6 RAV4 oil and filter, gets changed every 10,000 Km. || equals 6,210 miles
- and the used oil still retains 1/2 its honey color

WIX "XP" oil filters is their new Platinum line / using synthetic media....extended mileage filters.
- WIX Filters XP Oil Filters 51348XP https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...-_-wix-filters
A WIX XP Platinum synthetic filter, is same as Amsoil Filter, re-branded || www.Filter1.com also has good prices.
- once a year I order my filters in bulk, and drive to MI for parcel pickup

My favorite oil is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (from 99.5% clean N-Gas base stock) / Canadian Tire had on sale, few weeks ago.
- $47.98/5L Yellow Jug + HST
20 years using AMSOIL here...no more, too expensive without the extra added value proposition / competition has caught up or exceeded it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VIDEO - Why You Should Use 100% Synthetic Oil In Your Car (This Is A Must Watch) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc1qMp0Ea7Y

I no longer use Amsoil (Group IV & way to expensive), except for Syn. grease / Redline Group V for the Transmission & Gear oil.
And Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for engine oil, made from 99.5% clean Natural Gas base stock.
- my engine oil change frequency is 10,000 Km or 6,200 miles
- Fluid Capacity: 2000 4Runner SR5 v6 4x4 https://www.amsoil.com/AmsoilGarage/...OTA+4-RUNNER+8

RedLine Transmission Synthetic Group V - D6 ATF - gallon - $49.95 @ Summit / 30705

- Our lowest viscosity, most shear-stable ATF for consistent operation, designed to satisfy Dexron-VI®, Mercon®SP, Mercon®LV, Honda DW-1, Toyota WS, Mercedes Benz NAG-2, ZF-LG 6, 6+ and 8 fluids

Here is my recent 10k mile OCI report from Blackstone Labs. It looks like Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE is a 10k to 12k mile engine oil. Since I live in Montana, I usually drive fairly long distances; almost never any short trips (I have a little Saturn with over 265k on it that I use for the in-town trips). I also used a Fram XtraGuard oil filter on this run rather than my usual Amsoil filter.

Reviving this thread in hopes of a little advice:

After months of looking I recently purchased a used 2016 TEP with 16.5K miles on it. Dealer I bought it from didn't have any service records, but it was a good deal, and I figured at such low mileage I was probably safe (I can hear my dad yelling at me for buying a car with no service records).

Anyways, drove it home (Palm Springs to San Francisco) and about a week later got the oil changed. Unfortunately, the tech who changed it thought this was it's first oil change.

Given all that, are things you might check (beyond obvious fluid levels and such) that going so long without it's first oil change could have damaged. I just want to get things back on the right track here!

Thanks!

My suggestion: Drive it for awhile until the oil is again half-brown, then change it to 5/30 synthetic and a Toyota oil filter.

I think, we should do it every 5000 miles.

I go by oil analysis...all dependent on the oil you use and driving habits. I hate draining perfectly good oil, and hate using depleted oil even more.

I typically change my oil once in the spring and once in the fall - whatever the mileage. Based on my driving habits with the truck, it's typically 5000 miles or less (truck is not my daily driver). My daily driver is a Honda Civic and I change the oil the same - I just do them both on the same day. I've been using 5-30 synthetic from Amazon or Costco.

I think as this thread progresses and model years are newer and newer, folks tend to lean more towards longer intervals.

5000 mi maintenance question

Hey there it's been a while since I have been on here . I recently purchased a 2020 LTD 4x4 and just hit 5k and want to change the oil myself
as I do all my vehicles. what is the correct part number for the factory filter??
Thanks in advance...
I know it comes with free maintenance and I am not interested in bringing to the dealer to screw something up
besides with my other Toyota they wouldn't do it before 10k or 1 year.
