Keep in mind low annual mileage because of short trips is considered Severe Driving Conditions and calls for every 6 month oil change.

I go between 5-7k depending on how much driving and how it was driven. I use full synthetic only.

Just a heads up about changing your oil at a particular mileage. I just came back from an atv trip in Colorado from Houston & my maintenance light came on after only 4,500 miles. I was towing a 300# trailer, 700# atv with a cover that acted like a parachute, and I had 15-20mph wind against me the whole 2,200 miles round trip. I was also ascending from 135' to 10,000', drove though several mountain passes, and did a little off-roading on the Alpine Loop. Driving between 65 and 75 without cruise control was challenging for the 2015 4Runner (130k miles), and exhausting for me. I didn't use cruise because the vehicle couldn't maintain speed without constantly shifting gears. I got just under 16 mpg for the whole trip, otherwise the 4Runner did fine. I did use a more robust 5w-20 (instead of 0w-20) motor oil before this trip, which surprisingly reduced my mileage by 0.7mph for my daily commute of 72 miles round trip.

been doing 12k oil changes with this:
2019 Toyota 4-RUNNER recommended synthetic oil and filter
I have had a 2016, 2017, and now 2019, and never had any issues, realized the less I go to the dealer the less I spend and the more my vehicles last, lol.

“Sludge” - are we talking about metal particles?
Is the oil pan plug magnetic?
Is there any advantage to a magnet attached to the oil pan?

Magnetic drain plug is nice to see what is collecting from dirty oil. I had to get stainless one since my stock plug kept rusting after each cold season.

Every 5000 approx for me. I do mainly longer journeys and modern oil is excellent. It's not 1950 any more. I have never had to scrap a vehicle due to engine oil related failure.
Some cars here are on 18,000 miles intervals (Which is for fleet manager's benefit, not the 2nd, 3rd, etc owners benefit. But it shows how far oil has come)

My 2016 Trail has 174,000 miles and has only been changed every 10,000 per manufacture guidelines.
Runs like new and does not burn oil.
I have ordered a new 2022 TRD OFF Road and will do the same interval oil change

I still do every 6k miles. I know its not "necessary", but oil is the life of a car. For what it costs and how infrequent its needed, I think its well worth the trade off.
