Every two year and infrequent use oil change analysis
Quoting Indiana Jones: "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage."
I hope to help infrequent/short trip vehicle owners users to save some money.
I've attached a Blackstone analysis of a 2 year/5000 mile oil change.
Oil type: Normal Mobil 1 5W-30 with the recommended dosage of Liqui-Moly Mo-SO additive to minimize wear from weekly cold starts, (I live in central New England). Note: I have not noticed any increase of mileage with this additive, however the wear metals detected may have been decreased.
The OEM cellulose filter was changed at 3217 miles after the oil change. Easy for 4th gen V6 4runner! If synthetic media, that might not be required.
Blackstone comments refer to my 20 miles weekly trip to buy groceries and rare recreational trips concerns. I'm retired.
I'm not promoting Mobil 1...I.m sure any top tier synthetic oil would do.
Also not recommended for the people who beat on their vehicles. I baby my 4runner, except for an occasional "Italian tune-up".

A bit off topic but is it possible to use the shorter 9972 FRAM filter from the other main stream Toyota's on a 5th gen 4runner? Specs seems the same except it's a shorter stack.

If it's shorter then it's smaller, which means less filtration capability.
Why would you want that ???

Have a synthetic oil question
I have a 2009 SR5 6 cyl with 225K miles. 1) I’ve always used conventional oil for engine oil change, trans case change, and diffs. Should I continue with these conventionals or switch to synthetic. Vehicle is in great shape and no major issues. Would like to continue with conventionals but was curious about switching to synthetics. Thanks in advance for any advice out there.

The Fram oil filters I use say good for 10,000 miles. Usually I change oil and oil filter every 3-4k (~275k miles on '97). Would Fram suggest two oil changes per oil filter change?

NO !!!!!!!
Change the filter every time you change the oil.
Don't believe that marketing BS.
The oil and the filter work together, why would you just replace 1/2 of a system.

I really appreciate you, and others, posting your Blackstone reports. For the uneducated, like me, they give at least some insight into the mysterious realm of oils and oil change intervals. In general, the reports seems to indicate that longer intervals (in both mileage and time) can be perfectly reasonable.
