I think the point is using a "top tier" fuel more than a higher octane. Top tier fuels usually have a better additive / detergent pack than cheaper gas. For example the grocery stores near me aren't considered "top tier" but Costco is. Regardless I use a bottle of the Chevron Techron stuff every 3 or 4 months. Occasionally I'll put premium in if going on a long trip but I doubt it makes much difference in a 4Runner. Now my twin turbo F150 I had and my wife's turbo Lexus always got premium.

You should stop going to that mechanic. The top tier detergent is the same for all grades of fuel that a company sells.

On my current road trip (will be 1,500 miles or so when complete, mostly highway miles), I've tested 87 and 93 octane fuel. Also tested 10% ethanol fuel and standard dinosaur fuel.

Net -- no noticeable difference in the V6 in terms of mileage or highway power. With 87 octane, it will easily jump from 70 to 80 mph to pass an 18-wheeler. Mileage has been running around 21-22 highway, 19 mixed (Chicago traffic that goes 0 to 60 to 0 pretty quickly).

I've run it in 2WD mode all trip, with the air conditioner running almost all the time.

With 23 gallons in the tank, that gives a range of over 450 miles, although the trip computer says 420.

Unless I run across a station (and did in Bloomington, IL) where premium fuel is the same price as regular, I'll just stick with 87 octane and save $0.20 per gallon. That will leave a bit more money for mods!!
I like the thought process thanks for sharing!

I’ve noticed about 1-2 mpg difference using premium. Although it could be the ethanol percentage amounts that can vary by gas station.

stuck 93 in my new (as of today new) '98. Previous owner had used 87 and I thought giving it a good run on 93 ought to be a good idea. Anyway, 170 miles traveled like a breeze until I got back to to NYC. Seemed fine enough but stalled out as I was crawling to a light as I turned onto my home block. Started back up fine without any issues. Seller suggested that the higher octane isn't good for running the car at low RPM's, especially in the city where theres a lot of stopping and starting. Anyone else experienced that when running 93?

100% untrue. higher octane has absolutely no difference when idling than lower octane. you should ask the seller where he came up with that idea & provide some credible reason for that logic.

I find my 04 v8 runs better on 87. I was running 91 for awhile but didn't see a different in performance.

Top Tier Gasoline

My 2008 FJ had a sticker on the fuel door that said "Premium Gas Required".

My 2013 FJ did not, but I continued to run it on Premium, just out of habit.

My father worked in the oil refinery business until he retired. He always said only buy gas from a station that has its own refinery (meaning Top Tier). I think that is good advise.

Regular, I've even talked to the Gas Delivery Driver who stated that often times they just bring regular out and fill all tanks with it (excluding Diesel) at the big-box stores.

Do these stores add their own detergent?

Shell has E free in my home town. I run it whenever I can. Better gas mileage, though not enough to make up for the higher price. Still, my 19 runs better with that gas than anything else.
