That depends. If you are checking cold, use the cold marks, If hot, up to operating temp use the hot marks. Just remember, that the engine gets up to operating temp way before the transmission does. As long as it is between the min/max marks depending on temp, you are good to go. And always check the fluid level with engine running, in park, and on level ground.
