Oil filter wrench for 4th gen V8

For those that have changed the oil and filter on the V8 you probably know how hard it is to find a darn wrench that fits the filter properly. I've tried to find a fluted style that fits a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet the previous 3 times I've changed my oil with no luck. Well, I guess the fourth time was the charm. A local dealer that I got my filter from just happened to get in a set of 74mm (14 fluted) wrench that works perfectly (Larry Miller Toyota in Glendale, AZ).

I pick up a wrench at PepBoys. I walked in with my Toyota (90915-YYZD3) filter and fitted it to one that mated. I cannot insert the ratchet extension completely in the square hole however. Just half way in, or else the extension punches in thru the wrench & hits the filter.

Hey ToyotaDoodz. They are on the internet at Larrymiller-Toyota.com. The part # of the wrench is 30359-91020 for $5.49. The best money I've spent on the 4Runner recently, that's for sure.

I like the new BFG's by the way, very nice!

If you need a wrench you might be putting it on a tad too tight.

Sure, but that case could be made for anything. For me, it's hard to tighten by hand with oil residue keeping me from getting a good grip on the filter so I worry about not having it on good enough. If you use the wrench, common sense, and only tighten 1/2-3/4 of a turn after the filter makes contact then you should be fine.

On vehicles that I have owned, I put the oil filter on as hard as I can tighten it with my left hand (my weak hand), that way I can always remove it with my right hand. However, due to the close fit on the V8’s, I can not get it on tight enough to stop it from leaking, so I tighten it just a tad bit with a wrench.
