Engine surges

left my 2000 4Runner SR5, 4x4 V6, in storage for 10 months while I was in Afghanistan. The engine has 114K miles on it. When I start it up cold, it starts fine. The I put it in drive, and step on the gas, it surges and backfires, with barely any power/RPMs developing for about 30 to 45 seconds, about 50 yards down the road. Then "the problem" clears out and the vehicle runs more or less just fine. Can ANYONE tell me what the problem might be? When I start the engine warm, it doesn't do this and goes fine off the line.
