I have read about 3 cars going over a million miles in the U.S., a Volvo, a Mercedes and a Toyota. I think the Toyota was a Starlet. Both Volvo and Mercedes gave the owner a new car. Toyota gave the guy a letter congradulating him on going over a hundred thousdand miles. I think Jay Leno put him on the air and gave him a used Tercel.

Two things I find interesting in that story. He used Quaker State Oil and changed every 3,000 miles. I know Quaker State is not known for being the best oil, but changing every 3,000 is what I think is important. Changing oil is a good way to extent life, is what I get out of that story.

The engine is the same engine that I have in my old Previa. E-bay is currently selling a Previa with 298,000 with a busted transmission, but the engine works great. Maybe I'll keep that sucker for awhile.

The Volvo is a P1800. It was entered into the Guinness Book of Records in 1998, at 2 million miles. I am always skeptical when I hear this. The only well known engines that actually achieve this kind of mileage; are tractor-trailer diesels. I guess one could rebuild the engine over and over and over again. Along with all other moving and electrical parts, as long as rust does not set in and I guess one could cut & weld those sections. I don

Yeah, what the hell.....

So he changed his oil every 3000 miles with conventional motor oil?

How 'bout some trivia about that P1800 engine used in that sport model and all their other sedans. It has the just about the same combined main bearing and rod bearing area as a 64 Pontiac GTO 389 V8. There is something to be said for a good engine design no matter what kind of engine oil you use.

The Volvo driver you sited did not work for a living, he just drove around and his mileage is well documented with a diary that contains signatures and items collected at every place he stopped. He is the real deal.

I remember David Letterman once had a guest on his show with a Toyota that had one or two million miles. I think it was a Corolla. The guy spoke about how reliable the car was and he changed the oil every 3,000 miles. I think the show aired around a year ago.

My father had a Volvo 544 sedan with the 1800cc engine. I remember reading a road test article (Motor Trend maybe?) back then that said it had more bearing area than a Chevy 327 V8.

I drove that car in gymkhanas, and even towed a race car with it. He traded it in on another Volvo before it hit 150K miles, so I never knew its ultimately longevity.
