Hard to tell from the pic but it looks like maybe those are hex head bolts and not the carriage bolts? The hex heads are metric, carriage standard.

Go buy a Form-A-Funnel, reduced the mess a lot for my oil changes. I tuck it tight against the block under the sealing flange, the oil still dribbles down the block onto the cross member etc but to a much lesser degree.
