IMHO, it absolutely needs a re-gear unless you live in Florida. Shit, I run 275/70R17 tires and if I could have opted for a 4.10 or 4.30 gear ratio, I would have. It isn't worth it for me, as I don't have any plans to go bigger than that, but the truck is geared very tall.

It sounds like you're just binding the drivetrain by making sharp turns with the transfer case locked. There was likely sufficient traction in those corners to navigate them in 2WD. You won't hurt anything, just don't make lots of sharp turns on high traction surfaces with the t-case locked...
