Now that you mentioned it, it does look like he may have smoked the tire in hard braking. Just curious...would ABS prevent something like? :-)

I'm not a mechanic but if you google "tire wear pattern" you'll see that your tire has been underinflated for a long time. And the bald area probably lead to the ripe. I have also seen this wear on front tires for those who corner aggressively. Slow down on corners and/or check proper PSI...
