I've heard of some people using purple power or bleach to strip the chrome inside the corner lights. I believe they let it soak it in the housing. Haven't tried it myself, so cant verify it works. But may be worth a poke if you're looking to repaint.

Have you tried taking the axel shaft off the axel housing and use a hydraulic press to push/separate the axel shaft off the backing plate where it meets the drum? I think someone above said a new backing plate is not that expensive. (I have no idea how much) If all else fails, you can just...
