Out here, as long as it's carb legal then you are good on smog and inspections. i'll be keeping my stock stuff just in case. I've been looking into it since i came from florida where you can do just about anything to your vehicle, as long as you have seat belts and lights you can drive around on...
I'm also waiting on my airaid intake pipe to get here. It's carb legal, which is what I need out here in california. Also why I did that to the air box so that it looks stock.

It won't be too bad just have to pull the box out and remove the plexiglass cover to pull it out. Plus it's not like I'll be having to do that every week. I've had k&n on other vehicles and I'm always careful not to over oil them. I haven't had an issue yet.

I didn't do this today but I did do it the other day. I modified my air box to hold a k&n pod filter. Here are the pics:
