I wouldn't do the job without a water pump... I say do it. The external belt and maybe an idler/tensioner pulley might be in order. Depending on where you live the fanclutch may be getting tired too (unlikely but worth a look).

I don't know if I want to go near it since the article states the vette hasn't been touched in 30 years. I'm wondering how much oxidation is present in the motor/tranny/diffs. Original oil and all???? The body and hardware must be cherry, but the mechanical components, well, I'll be weary about it.
