In January I towed a uhaul 6x10 trailer(2500lbs) packed(1500lbs) from San Francisco, CA to Portland, OR...twice. It handled fine although you could tell it was a bit sluggish compared to normal, I did the same as TEujunga stayed in S5 mostly and downshifted as needed for the inclines/descents...

ah yeah putnam has some bad eggs as far as sales go, I am going to check out melody toyota as they accept the costco auto program. Do you remember who you worked with buying your 4runner and if you dont mind me asking what did you pay?
