Just as a side note: I believe the U-joint that went bad was caused by pulling my boat around and launching it into salt water frequently. The combination boat/trailer weight exceeded the max rated towing capacity for the vehicle by about 800lbs.

Those original breathers are an abomination. I've never not replaced the seal when it starts leaking, so IDK if just doing the breather will stop the leak. Those outer oil seals are pretty easy to replace. It's been a while since I've done one so I'm not going to give you the step by step...

I buy the oil from walmart, filter and drain plug gasket from Toyota, and have it changed at a local shop for $18. Total cost is around $40. I could change it myself but it's more convenient to take it somewhere. They let me watch, plus they top off all the fluids and tires if needed.

While you're working on your rear differential this is a good modification for the breather. I've had problems with my '98 and '99 4Runner rear axle oil seals leaking until I did this. 4Runners.org - Type R Rear Differential
