I got the Gates kit on Amazon for around $180 last month and didn't have any issues.

Just an update in case anyone else has this problem. My blend door has been in the half-open position in the photos (as far as I know) since last fall. So far I haven't noticed any adverse effects. I don't know whether it's the worth the money and effort for me right now to try and fix it.
