Replacing rear wheel cylinders, master cyl, and fully flushing the brake system did wonders for my ABS. It used to be terrifying but now it works great. I would look into underlying issues before disconnecting anything.
I know this is an old thread but I used this thread and a few other old threads here when looking to replace my shocks and struts last week so I wanted to add my experience for others doing the same in the future.
I ended up installing KYB gas-a-just shocks/struts on my 97 and I am beyond happy...
