    2023 digital display of MPH

It’s a design/font choice, seen on other Toyotas as well.

    GPS Blues... anyone with me?

Not sure what I'd use the factory GPS for, unless I didn't pay attention on my way to a remote trailhead and just wanted to get pointed in the right direction until I'm back in cell coverage. Your favorite maps app on Carplay or Android Auto will be better than any manufacturer's built in GPS...

    2024 unchanged, as expected

I'm pretty sure blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were already standard on all 2023 models. But there could be other small changes that didn't make the press release cut, like heated steering wheel for premiums and up in 2023.

    2024 unchanged, as expected

Toyota put up a 2024 press release today. The only changes that I see are the new Terra color for TRD Pro and the new Underground color mentioned. Interestingly, the picture they are using is definitely a photoshop of a pre-2022 TRD Pro, as it doesn't have the front or mirror cameras for the...

Sudden high idle and possible fix

Good points. I did notice the two stripped screws on the IAC, but was still able to get it off without much fuss. I guess I got lucky that I was able to drive it so long before it acted up.

Sudden high idle and possible fix

Ok, just want to wrap this one up. I went to a junkyard today and looked at two different 3rd gen throttle bodies. Both of them had this ‘set screw’ on the back of the throttle body adjusted so that the ‘plunger’ (extended because no vacuum applied) was pushing open the butterfly just barely...

Sudden high idle and possible fix

So if I can get it set ‘close enough’ where it seems to idle about right and feels fine driving, is good enough good enough? Or could it being off affect something else?

Sudden high idle and possible fix

Interesting, I guess so. Hopefully I can set it close enough that the ECU can keep it within a good range. BTW, thanks for your videos. Lots of help over the last few years, and I used the IAC valve video today for reference.

Sudden high idle and possible fix

Appreciate the help! I believe the this is true for the 01-02, which have a different throttle body, but the 2000s have the same throttle body as the 96-99. The 01/02 have a motor like you mentioned, looks to me like it spins the butterfly, but the 96-00 have a bolt-on idle air controller that...

Sudden high idle and possible fix

So I was on my way to go backpacking this morning, and two hours into the drive I came to my first stop and noticed that my ‘00 V6 auto was idling about 1500 RPM in drive. Pulled into a gas station, and RPMs went up to about 3000 in park. Under the hood I saw a cracked cold intake hose, but a...

What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

We are traveling the US and racked up more than 17,000 miles in the last two months, so it was time for a bit of work! Luckily we had a few days back 'home' before heading off again. It was a good couple of days - I gave the buggy and grimy AC condenser a good cleaning with coil cleaner...

    Transmission Overheating

I appreciate the perspective! I tend to obsess over small problems with the truck, so it's good to hear that. I will see about putting a trans cooler on - its weird finding a place to work on it because we are on the road full time right now.

    Transmission Overheating

Nope. In fact, we were fine in the CO mountains. Now we are in Texas, 2000-4000 ft elevation or so, and it is overheating.

    Transmission Overheating

I'll give this a try. What concerns me is that I haven't had to do this on much tougher/longer hills at higher elevations to keep it 'in spec' even a couple weeks ago. I have not noticed a whining noise, it sounds normal to me. I'll listen closer though. What was the fix for you, new transmission?

    Transmission Overheating

We are about one month and 7,000 miles in to our tour of the US in our 2000 4Runner 2WD, and I've started having what I think are overheating issues with the transmission. A couple days ago, I pulled out my monitoring phone (OBD II Bluetooth adapter + Torque Pro on an Android phone) on the...
