Understood, I wasn't sure about the Hilux surf as I've only had experience with the regular Hilux.
Out of interest what engine does the that gen surf come with?
Landcruiser Prado aka Colorado is the same platform. A rear axle should have all the correct link mounts etc.
Regular Hilux will be leaf spring and therefore won't be a direct swap although I believe they do use the same axle.

Seriously doubt there is any electrical assistance to steering or brakes in a 1985 vehicle. AFAIK brakes would be vacuum assisted and power steering hydraulic.
Losing ABS (if equipped) should not disable the brakes, just the ABS function.
