I've not had any run-ins with the VVTI, but my 04' with 120k on it is running great. Good to know about the 2nd gen 1GR-FE. Sounds like a SBC is the way to go.

My wife drives an 01', and I drive a 04'. We're going to be using the 04' as a trade-in for a new car, and so I'll be driving the 01' soon. My choice would be the 4.0 1GR-FE with the dual VVTI that's in the 5th gen. Still a Toyota V6, but with a nice 80hp & 80 lb-ft of torque gain. If Toyota...
