I have had good luck using a rubber "eraser wheel" for removing decals and side molding from my wife's ride. I know that the older decal/stripes are going to be harder to remove though.

Recovery gear should come first. I have lost track of how many times over the years I have ran across people who are stuck, and they have no recovery gear or good recovery points.
