Where to look for not so obvious coolant leaks

Good news! Had my son start his truck and leave it to warm up. It ran about 10 minutes and I still could not find a leak anywhere. I wrapped up my work as he was heading out with a pal. As he pulled out of the driveway I saw it. A puddle under the passenger side rail. I stopped him and...

Where to look for not so obvious coolant leaks

Thanks all for your suggestions, I am sorry for the delay in responding. The coolant is actually the green stuff rather than red but will look out in spots mentioned. In the past when I have had a vehicle burning coolant, the exhaust has had a very distinctive odor. I don't smell it with this...

Where to look for not so obvious coolant leaks

When you guys fix rear axle seal....

Unless you had the bearings replaced, it seems unlikely that the parts are mispositioned. The oil seal rides on the surface of the inner bearing retainer. The position of the bearing retainer and the ABS rotor is important. If the ABS rotor is pressed all the way out against the bearing...

Trouble removing starter from engine bay. Please help!

still went in smoothly :) If the boot on the cable into the starter body had been in better shape I would have done the same. I decided I did not want to risk having to do the starter in the middle of winter if the salt water found its way in via capillary action.

Trouble removing starter from engine bay. Please help!

There is also a write up on this site that has some good info, here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/63228-another-starter-contacts-removal-thread.html I found that after removing the trans dip stick tube and unbolting the two brake line brackets, the brake line will swing out of...

3rd left side axle seal today

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I am pretty sure the dealership did the actual work. When I took it back the second time, the tech who did the work came out and had to put some stickers on the work order. I was guessing that he ate the time. Ater I got it back together, I called...

3rd left side axle seal today

yep, actually did a lot of searching before I even tackled the job. Thanks for the link though. When I originally found the problem I decided to do bearings both sides since the seals that failed were less than a year old - dealer installed. I thought there might be a reason the seals failed...

3rd left side axle seal today

Pulled the drum to see if the new seal was leaking last night and sure enough, it was. This morning I pulled it apart and removed the seal. On previous installs, I noticed that there was a very small burr at the leading edge of the bore that the seal presses into. I suspect a previous user...

    Running board mounting stud question

I managed to snap the mounting stud on the front left side when installing a running board today. I was too frustrated at the time to check it out, I just left it. Does anyone know if the stud is a press fit or a weld stud? I am trying to figure out how big a PITA it is going to be to fix...

    (Another) Starter Contacts Removal Thread!

Just a comment on the process and getting the top bolt out of the starter. I ended up using a 3" extension on the socket, then a universal, then a 16" extension. This gave me enough clearance to swing the ratchet meaningfully (more than two clicks per turn). I did not remove the exhaust...

BTT Make me an offer, I would rather have someone use these parts than put them in the scrap bin.
