My '04 V8 had its transfer case reaplaced under warranty at around 15k miles. It has 176k on it now and still works great. One thing to keep in mine and this is really just my opinion - I wouldn't buy a 4th gen V6 model unless it was an '06 model or newer due to the common head gasket...

I have an04 Limited with the V8. It tows my 4,000 lb boat with no problem and sounds awesome when I have to step on it while merging onto the highway.

If the frame is good I would have a hard time not making that trade. The V8 motor is awesome and the difference in gas mileage is far from drastic. The V8 models are full time 4ws not awd. I would think the V8 would be better to build on given how much better it will handle the extra weight.
