I wouldn't call the 3.4l strong. Even with the 5 speed manual it's pretty slow to me. That's coming from a guy who absolutely loves 4runners.

I have a 98 with 906 coils. They make the truck sit at a good height and are strong. I would just buy new just to avoid all the issues of buying used. Brand new for only $70 more.

I have a 98 v6 with a 5 speed. Are you referring to the gear box whine? I've had that ever since I bought it used 4 years ago. My old Toyota tercel my brother gave me had that too since new.
