I know there's a million different things/sounds/noises/clunks that could be going on but I recently had similar symptoms, weird steering wheel behavior over washboard bumps and smaller bumps. It turned out to be the drivers side tierod adjustment jam nut was totally loose thanks to an alignment...

It's worth repeating, Roadforce balancing is important and making sure the lug centric adapter is used on the balancing machine with oem wheels. I recently had C rated K02's mounted and just naively trusted a random tire shop chain and of course, they had neither and had a pretty noticeable...

I agree totally, but I was just stating (maybe the obvious), that if you have concern that it's a quick way to understand if something is awry with a certain component. With these motors, I have very little concern myself, for better or worse they do make some noise :laugh:

I've never done it on my 4Runner because I've never been concerned, it's loud and makes noise no doubt. But if I was curious about it, I'd just listen to the injectors or the valve cover areas with a screwdriver to the ear to isolate where it's coming from, it would be obvious.

Sadly, this is why I keep my oem ones on instead of removing them. It's not a great reason, I'd prefer to take them off, but in the area I live in it's an issue and for some reason door dings for all the various reasons really grind my gears (cough: BECAUSE THEY'RE AVOIDABLE).

Do you mind sharing which shop? It would be worthwhile to keep track of this in the future since I'm in the same area as you. I've always been particular about this sort of thing with my cars and used specific shops, hoping to find good places for the 4Runner though.
