my mom n dad have a 2004 4runner that the hatch lock went bad. when you would gently close the hatch to let the motor pull in the hatch and lock it, i would ONLY pull the hatch down and then release it. Toyota dealer charged them $355 to take it out test it and tell them "yep, it's bad" then...
