There is a terminal block that is in the drivers kick that gets damaged from water ingress like you describe, that bricks the ECU on the other side of the car.. I suspect that's what is going on and your ECU is partially bricked. Be warned a replacement ECU has to be programmed at the dealer.

I always just watch the washers and torque until I see them start to deform sideways.

Pulled the glovebox and checked the wiring for the thermistor. The colors do match the diagram. There isn't a lot of room to work with the wiring and I don't want risk screwing it up trying to crimp it so I think I want to get a set of pigtails for both ends. Anyone know where to find these...
