Any experience installing a 5th gen rack into a 4th gen?

Update: I’m around 5,000 miles after having fixed the leak at the fitting of the high pressure line into the rack. I simply used a bigger o-ring. I just used one, not a stack of them. In retrospect, I wish I went with an even bigger o-ring. I just measured the ID of the fitting and went with...

Any experience installing a 5th gen rack into a 4th gen?

Sorry for the slow reply—I concluded that the 5th gen line can’t be used, but can’t remember exactly why at this moment. I think there were physical differences in the routing of the hard line that made it unworkable.

Any experience installing a 5th gen rack into a 4th gen?

Further updates here: I’m now about 8,000 miles into the swap. I definitely have a leak at the high pressure line fitting onto the rack. I am going to have to take the line off and try a bigger o-ring or either stack two o-rings together. I haven’t tracked the rate of loss but I’ve dropped below...

Any experience installing a 5th gen rack into a 4th gen?

Thanks for asking/prompting. It’s been a little over 4,500 miles now since the swap. I haven’t noticed any issues at all. Bolts are all still in tight, alignment has held, it’s driving correctly, nothing has fallen off while driving down the road, etc. On the fittings, I took a chance that the...

Any experience installing a 5th gen rack into a 4th gen?

The outer tie rod from the 5th gen bolted up perfectly to the 4th gen spindle. I measured before I did the install, and if the taper isn’t the same on the 4th and 5th gen, it’s so close there’s no practical difference. But, you can’t mix and match 4th gen and 5th gen outers and inners. The shaft...

    Locked Up's 4Runner

Just ran across your thread and your info on the manual t-case swap. Nice work. Do you have any more pictures of the modified shifter? I too am planning to install the manual shift case but the shifter routing is one thing that’s holding me up—I’ve just not seen a way that the stick has been...

4th Gen Steering Rack- OEM vs OEM-Reman

I just finished the swap. It works, and it apparently works great. I just posted the summary below in the “will 5th gen rack work in 4th gen” thread but will pasting it here too. Very pleased with the swap so far. Time will tell more, but I’m very optimistic for long term success! “I have...

Any experience installing a 5th gen rack into a 4th gen?

I have confirmed that this will work. Just finished installing a rack and all tie rods from a 2021 into my 06 4Runner. No fab needed. It was actually not too difficult. The 11mm diameter 4th gen bolts work just right in the 5th gen rack, despite the fact that the 5th gen bolts are 14mm, because...

4th Gen Steering Rack- OEM vs OEM-Reman

Forgot to mention—from the scant material available to research, I think that the “fab” involved is to make the bolt holes in the 4th gen frame a bit bigger because the 5th gen bolts are bigger. I do not have 5th gen bolts to make that comparison, and haven’t made it by my local dealer lately to...

4th Gen Steering Rack- OEM vs OEM-Reman

I asked the questions having done some research myself but it’s inconclusive. I’ve seen someone say they’ve put a 460 rack on a 470, so then in theory it should work on our 4Runners, but wherever I saw that didn’t have much detail. I’ve also seen places where people say they are completely...

3rd Gen Tacoma suspension on 4th Gen Limited

This was also my experience. The fronts are great. But the rears—and to be clear, it’s just the shocks since the 3rd gen tacos had leafs—are not suitable. I also went with Bilsteins as well, just using the set specific to the 4th gen 4Runner. I’m using Moog FJ Cruiser rear springs for my rear...

4th Gen Steering Rack- OEM vs OEM-Reman

Please say more about the 5th gen upgrade. What fab work does it involve?

    5th Gen 4Runner Brakes Upgrade (for 4th Gen 4Runner)

Well, in that case, maybe it was entirely user error in setting the old ones up, and having everything OEM now is the difference. When I bought it two years ago, NTB had recently put new parking brake hardware on for the PO. They screwed it up, so I redid it. I didn’t touch the 5th gen hardware...

    5th Gen 4Runner Brakes Upgrade (for 4th Gen 4Runner)

Since no one advised not to do it, and I don’t see why it shouldn’t work just fine for a while, I went ahead with the 5th gen setup as I did my axle swap. So I’m now running 5th gen rears and 4th gen fronts. I’ll swap the fronts once I find a good set of OEM 5th gen calipers for the front. That...

    Rear Wheel Bearing Tool

If you’re near Birmingham, AL, I’ll sell you mine. I bought it to do mine bearings thinking they were my problem but they weren’t. It’s still in the box where I bought it from Duane from his eBay listing.
