Hi OP, Hopefully you have solved your problem by now. I too had that "whirring" noise. I few weeks after I initially heard the noise my car would not start. The problem turned out to be the starter. I replaced the started and haven't had any issues turning my car on since.

I replaced mine at 273K. My driver side CV Axle broke and decided to replace the LBJs because I had everything taken apart already.

Hopefully you resolved your problems already. I also previously had the squealing at full lock. It went away once I installed the timing kit recommended on here sold on eBay.
