Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

It's been a productive night. I've got the first production ish board completed. While this one does work, there are a few things that are off. I didn't have 3 of the SMT resistor values I needed, so I substituted thru-hole. I also had to use headers to mount the STM32, making it sit much...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

I've posted the code to git hub. To any adventurous enough, you can start testing and contribute to the code or design there. GitHub - ColtB45/T4R-Auto-Headlights: Automatic Headlights for 5th Gen Toyota 4Runners I've migrated to the STM32 as the primary platform, but included my original work...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

After much tinkering and tweaking, this will have two configurations (same module and firmware. Configured via jumper or config option over USB.). Both require the OEM light sensor (2 minutes worth of work on 4Rs that have the wiring harness) CAN bus only operation – In this configuration the...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

So if I'm understanding you correctly, on the Canadian spec models there's no ability to turn the DRLs off? If so, they may accomplish that through the switch eliminating the off position. Or it might be done in the MPX (the Canadian spec models also have different MPX versions than the US) by...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

Can you share a picture of the switch? I wasnt aware there was a switch without 4 positions (Off, DRL, Parking Lights, Headlights). If you only have 3 positions (guessing off, parking, headlights) that would be an issue. If that's common, I could make a version that worked in such situations by...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

The teensy 3.2 is less than $25 shipped. The SN65HVD230 is $9 for two on eBay. Negligible cost for wire, solder, etc. Once I have the code where I want it, I'll release that & the schematics here.

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

I've had a busy weekend... YouTube This is very early alpha. It's running entirely off of a Teensy 3.2 & SN65HVD230 CAN transceiver. Everything else you see (the raspberry pi, the laptop, etc.) is there for diagnostics and not required for it to work. It's entirely CAN bus controlled. I did...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

This makes a lot of assumptions (switched GND, 3.3v logic level on the MPX) but it's easily altered if those assumptions prove false. It also doesn't mean I am giving up on the MPX, more of a stop-gap/alternate path. Forgive the crudeness. I didn't use Eagle, this was done in paint.net. The...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

rigtec, Do you happen to have a higher resolution/better version of this? I'm exploring the MCU idea and cant make out the wire colors or descriptions from this copy. EDIT: Also, does anyone know what the voltages at the light switch are? I am assuming it's pretty low, switched ground, likely...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

I'll defer to Old Red since he is the only one to of done it thus far. We haven't found a way to do it non-intrusively over the diag port. It involves removing the MPX, opening it, desoldering the flash chip, and dumping it. That will likely scare most off.:fear:

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

I appreciate your help. I was looking over those diagrams early on and they were invaluable. Regarding electrical/component layout, you're right, the various MPX units are the same. However they do differ in firmware. Thus far unique SR5 and Limited configs have been identified. It seems likely...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

In recent years it seems only the MPX firmware is different. The wiring harness for the photocell is already present. That does seem to differ on 4runners more than a couple years old as they don't seem to have the photocell harness from the factory. The stalk/switch and associated harness also...

Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

CdS photocells are simple resistor devices. There is no way to directly "share" one without affecting the reading from it. The way the 4Runner gets around this is the MPX/BCM reads the photocell directly and then broadcasts that info to the rest of the vehicle via the CAN bus. That way any...
