My guess would be a piece from your sattelite radio attenna. If it is still working properly maybe someone at the factory dropped a loose part and it fell out onto your carpet. Good Luck

How much weight can you pile on top of the box? Does the unit feel sturdy and do you think it will last a number of years?

Toyota might not do it but there may a local company in your area Which will teach you how to offroad properly. We have one in our area And it caters to peoples different driving skills.

2 wheel drive 4runners are rear wheel drive not front wheel drive

Most vehicles nowadays full power steering boost at low speeds then have none or very little at highway speeds. Not really an issue unless you are a nitpicking idiot
