The addition of homelink transmitters in vehicles is nothing new. Homelink in vehicles existed in 95. In 96 garage door openers started using rolling codes. The was an issue with rolling code capable vehicle transmitters but that was addressed around 1998. So many 95-97 vehicle transmitters...

Yes you can wire the homelink to a switched power source and then it will work with the key. The homelink also can retain memory well past 1 year without power. It would also be a good idea to clear the homelink codes before trading a car in or selling it.
