I would argue that your results were subjective and not typical.
Our very own 2RZ/3RZ would be an ideal case study because they started with distributors and then two wasted spark coils before getting COP ignition.
That's a potential problem, although I would be surprised if the safety factor for the coil duty cycle was only 2. Some aftermarket coils at least have the specs available. For example, the IGN-1A "smart" coils are limited to about 40%. That allows them to be used on a low-ish rpm 4cyl...
