You mentioned the 'play' is counter-clockwise and clockwise. So, is it a rotational 'play' or an in & out movement. The snap ring should come installed on the shaft, hence the rapping on the unit to get it to seat. If it is a rotational movement, is that with the wheel off the ground?

Glad you found your lug nuts! Of course, the wheels you are putting on are nice, so, as others have said, get some locking lugs. On ebay, you can get them cheap, but I think they will be labeled as Mag Lugs.... Just a thought...

I bought a set of lugs last year from ebay just to change them out, and the owners page spec'd them out as acorns. Of course the tread type was fine, but they were too small. I have the 5 spoke wheels and the original lug has a washer and seats flat on the wheel. Of course, I should have checked...

Check the seat on the wheel, if its flat you need mag type lugs, if it's tapered you need acorns.
