I've only run my Softtopper for a year, but I'm very happy with it. I run it with the windows rolled up most of the time. It is lightweight and easy to take off and on.

1987 T4R now in Woodstock I moved my family and 1st Gen 4Runner from Maryland to Woodstock in September. My truck is almost completely stock, but I hope to upgrade the brakes and install an Old Man Emu 2" lift this winter so I can find some trails this summer.

If you have the space and your father's buy-in, snag the rolling chassis if you need the interior. It's much nicer and cheaper taking parts off a vehicle in your driveway than in a salvage yard. The body and frame are worth a couple hundred at least for scrap. A title makes scrapping it much...

It looks like you have a solid truck with some great basic components to build upon. You still have enough fixes and improvements to make it your own in relatively short order. Without seeing detailed pics, I assume you can make some "tweaks" to the SAS set-up to make it more to your liking...
