I think it might be a little smaller than the Lexus RX as it is based on the upcoming Honda Civic platform. You guys sure have it good with pricing as the RDX will be $40k plus in Canada. From what I was told by the Acura dealer, the RDX primary target is the BMW X3.

If you happen to see them on the sides of your vehicle, the other possiblity could be brake dust or residue. There was some discussion about a similar issue on the Nissan X-Trail Forum and the consensus was likely due to brake dust sticking to the vehicle and then starting to rust.

I wouldn't mind if the Canadian 4Runners would let you individualize the options as I gather that US 4Runners can be somewhat customized. We are stuck with 3 models being "Base, Sport and Limited". Another item is making navigation an option as well.
