Went in blind on a '95, paying the price and almost in over my head

Yes I'm jumping the terminals and getting the dash ligjts to flash so I know that part is correct. I paid $2200 for it. So far I've bought and installed a new cat, both O2 sensors, a wiring harness from the junkyard, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. So I'm in close to another $400 minus my time...

Went in blind on a '95, paying the price and almost in over my head

Ok back at it today with new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Timing still at 10* and no change in performance or drivability. Disconnected the sub-O2 sensor and the miss at 1-2 upshift goes away so obviously I need to chase that. Moved the distributor 1 tooth CW and it ran as flat as a dog. Went...

Went in blind on a '95, paying the price and almost in over my head

OK I was able to put in a little time this morning. Crank pulley at BTDC set at 0*, pulled back the timing belt cover and the cam pulley notches are at 12 o'clock. Distributor set at 10* at idle still cranked all the way CCW to get that setting. Rotor pointed at #1 on the cap where the pkug...

Went in blind on a '95, paying the price and almost in over my head

Awesome guys! Thank you for the sound advice. I have parked the truck for the moment while I read and read and read about installing a new timing belt, water pump, idler and thermostat in one fell swoop. I figured there had to be a way to verify a few things before I dove in head first. No now...

Yes you are 100% correct. But I bought it as-is, etc thinking I knew better. Lesson learned. I'm confident I can sort this thing out. I've revived way worse projects but they were all pre smog so this is just an uncharted road for me.

Went in blind on a '95, paying the price and almost in over my head

Hey everyone. I've been on here lurking for a few months and finally have a reason to start posting. I got into a '95 with the 3.0 and auto trans for what I thought at the time was a pretty good deal. It is super clean inside and out and seemed to run fine. Power isn't anything to rave about...

Any 2nds Gens without Running Boards?

First thing I did when I got my truck was pull them off. Looks way better IMO. I tried to sell mine locally on CL and Offer Up for $40 with zero takers. They ended up on the curb for the scrap metal guys to take. YMMV, Ferrett

The 3.0 gets a bad rap for very real reasons. Look up the head gasket issue. I just got into a 95 with the same engine and in hindsight should have looked around a little more. but I got mine cheap enough that if it ends up biting me in the ass it will be a nibble, not a huge chunk gone! 1st & 2nd gen 4-runner tech (factory service manual and common fixes)

Man this thread is a life saver! I'm new to the forum and new to 4runners in general. My sub O2 wires for my '95 were cut by the PO and some funky wiring done. of course I don't pass smog so I'm chasing them down one by one. Wish me luck! Ferrett

    Need parts source advice

I would troll local wrecking yards. A few 10 year old rigs are bound to end up there. I hit my local one today here in SoCal and there were a few later models there. Ferrett

    Grass strategy?

You're gonna have to poke your head underneath once in a while and pull out debris. One guy I remeber would park on his lawn after a messy run and turn one of those arcing sprinklers on for an hour. YMMV. Ferrett
