as a followup. I had the work done on the driver's side rear axle as the leaking was worse on that side. they did a rear axle seal replaced, the bearing replaced and new brake shoes and pads. It's driving way better and i think that was the issue..the axle was leaking oil and it gunked up ABS...

Yeah, I'm not confident enough to do this job myself, so I'll have to get creative and get a mechanic to help. Does anybody here have stories of getting this issue and having results from doing the rear axle leak seal replaced along with the bearings and brake shoes? THanks

Here are two pics of the brake pad and the shaving and leaking that has been taking place. Is this common for 4runners to have rear brakes locking when coming to a stop because of the gear oil leak onto the pads?

Yeah the mechanic is quoting $1300 to do all of that and I'm not ready to put all the money into it...especially when I'm hearing 2 different causes for the slippage. @NelsonMD, so you recommend just doing the seal on both sides. and leaving the rings and retainers alone?

well...a mechanic is tell me that these need to be replaced bearings (rear axle) both sides inner outer seals abs rings and retainers and shoes oil leaked to brakes does this sound what's causing the issue i'm having with the stop and then popping into gear? what does it costs to get those...

Thanks all! My mechanic just looked at it and thinks that it could need a tranny flush, but I'm going to hold off for now since it apparently is driving ok. I would just hate for it to not work for my wife when I hand it over to her.

for the 1997 4runner, v6 engine, what's the ATF fluid I should use? The manual says Dexron II or III. Where can I get that now or is there an equivalent? I picked up Dexron/Mercon 75,000+ miles from O'Reilly's, but I'm not sure this is right.

I should have added that when it is driving on the roads or highways, the shifting doesn't miss a beat, so I don't know if that makes i the transmission or slip yoke. cool. I'm going to have my mechanic check it out in the morning and if he recommends a transmission flush, I will ask him to do...
