My one owner Black 1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 has terminal frame rail rust. She just turned 160,000 miles and runs and drives fine. She has a 5 speed manual transmission without the e-locker. The body, drive train and interior are in pretty good shape. The rear bumper and drivers running board...

We had some snow recently and it was sure nice having the 4wd working! Now I just have to decide if I am going to take on the frame rust or sell her as a parts car... More fun!

Problem Resolved! Turns out that the VSV was bad AND the Actuator was frozen. I bought a used VSV on eBay for $35.00 and took it too my dealer to complete the diagnosis. Cost me $ 180.00 including replacing the VSV and freeing up the Actuator. The 4WD started working the day the snow melted.

Yeah... I followed your thread. Mine is not as bad as yours. She remains drivable. I had her evaluated at a body shop that said , in theory, they could fix her. Then, after seeing her on a lift, the owner said it was not worth it. His #2 guy is preparing a price for me on a frame swap, which...

The title says it all. She has 158k on the clock. No body rust. Still safe to drive... Runs great... New clutch, tires and many other repairs done... Still needs more. Probably not going to try. I'm not going to part her out myself as I don't have the skills or place to work. I welcome...

Any opinions on my vacuum situation? Is it most likely a stuck VSV or could it be something else? Any news from the OP? Where's The Durk?

I have a 97 SR5 5 speed with just a second stick for 4wd hi and low, no button. The 4wd will not engage and of course neither will the light on the dash. We have determined that the propeller shaft engages but the front differential does not... Performed the vacuum switch test and the front...

Buckaroo... Thank you so much for identifying and endorsing Farris Frame Restoration in Pataskala, OH. I discovered frame rust issues yesterday and after searching for a repair source locally in Cleveland for 3 hours to no avail... I found your post... I now have a course of action thanks to you!

So I see that I was wrong in believing that ALL lights came on at start up as a self diagnostic test. I have my Runner at the shop. Hopefully I'll find out what is wrong. I wonder if there are other lights that don't self diagnose. Thanks again for your interest and help!
