i was having similar problems when i first got mine running (knock sensor code and very eratic shifting) would not shift, couldn't get out of it's own way. i traced the problem to a shift solenoid #2 i believe went to junk yard and robbed solenoids out of a supra auto fixed the problem for me...

i have the same issue 90 3.0 idles great when nothing on turn on ac and it struggles to run,i have replaced the alternator (i thought it might be weak) and still does it. i have been trying to figure it out for months good luck

i have never tried to run mine thru emissions but i know it would not pass just find someone in an outlying area and register it there i live in maricopa no testing for me and i have budddies that use my address to register there stuff

if you are just doing the knock sensor you don't need to pull the heads so you don't need head gaskets
