It's not really a question of effective range, but triangulation (or whatever it would be called with 6-ish sensors). These are located strategically in the car that can figure out where the key is in relation to the sensors. So, inside the car, outside the driver door, passenger door, etc...

Well, you're in luck, I did the same thing when installing my rack. I even munged the bracket spinning it with the last bolt. The good news is its recoverable! You will need to take apart some trim and headliner. The bracket I recovered was the rear passenger side. I did enough trim to...

A note for removing the rack. Do no more than a half turn on the first bolt, then a half turn on the other and then repeat once again. The bolts are not seated very far into the floating receiver clip, so it is easy to remove one bolt completely. Then you may not be able to break the Locktite...
