    What else do you drive?

It is pretty fun. All original at this point, except that my dad and I did the body and paint 25 years ago. Even the original 8 miles per gallon! There are bolt on brake upgrades etc that I would like to do, but life is a bit too busy at this point, so it just sits several months of the...

    What else do you drive?

I have a 97 Locked 5 Speed for summer, a 96 Limited for the terrible winters, and a 1955 Buick Special for those trips to the ice cream shop!

Anyone get much past 300k on a 3rd gen 4runner?

Currently in the 360s miles, almost no repairs I have 585 000 kms on my 96 Limited and other than a temp sensor at 270 000, spark plugs, wires and timing belts, there has been no engine work. The only repairs (other than maintenance) have been a fuel pump at 450 000 kms, ball joints at 330 000...

What kind of RPM 5 speed makes at 80mph

My 3.4 l 5 speed with e-locker runs 2300 at 100 km/h (62mph) and that is about 3100 at 130 km/h (80 mph). Must have lower gears in it. The photo is upright on my phone - not sure why it is upside down

    2000 4runner 5speed opinion

I have a 97 5 speed with the e-locker and a 96 Limited. The 5 speed is geared way lower than the Limited (auto transmission) - 2400 rpm at 100 km/h vs 2000 rpm. Overall it is way peppier, likely due to the low gearing. Pros: - Put on bigger tires and still be geared lower (read have more...

    Automatic VS Manual ??

It is also about gearing... There is more to this question than clutches and drinking coffee. I have a 1996 Limited and a 1997 Sr5 V6 5 speed with the locker. The biggest difference between them is the gearing. At 100 km/h the Limited runs at 2000 rpm, and the SR5 runs at 2400 rpm. The 5...

    MPG on your 3rd Gen?

My best tank was 25.6 mpg US, and I am still trying to figure out what happened to my 4runner as it leaned out significantly 80,000 kms ago - plugs burn white as snow, and great economy. I have 515, 000 kms on it with original injectors and no engine work other than timing belts and spark...

    What's your top speed?

Just found this old video. It was taken over 100 000 km ago, and to be fair, there was a dip in the road at about 150 km/h, which is why it seems to pull all the way. My driveway always came up too fast so I never quite reached 160 km/h, or 100 mph. https://vimeo.com/182655599 Now...

How to build a 4runner Sleeping and Storage area

I am just over 6 feet, and I am going to make the lower rear seat bolts like wing nuts so they can be easily removed, make a 2 piece stacking support that is the same height as the folded down seat. Then you can be as tall as you want. When not sleeping, the 2 stackable supports will go...

Fuel economy keeps INCREASING. Need help or ?

And if I remember correctly, lean means hot, which can be a problem.

Fuel economy keeps INCREASING. Need help or ?

I pulled 2 spark plugs, and the plug wires had deteriorated off in the plastic tube where the metal end that snaps to the spark plug was crimped to the spark plug wire, so I had to replace the wires. 30 years ago, I was taught that the spark plug should be a chocolate brown. Now this was...

Fuel economy keeps INCREASING. Need help or ?

Here are the results: Even with the cruise control set, there was a bit of variation, the fuel trim would bounce between low positive and low negative numbers.

Fuel economy keeps INCREASING. Need help or ?

It is the original pump... Hmmm. It does not starve for fuel when I step on it, though.

Fuel economy keeps INCREASING. Need help or ?

Thanks for the feedback! I do not like it when a vehicle changes behaviour and I don't know why. I enjoy the extra 5 or so mpg I am getting, and will check the fuel flow rate at 100 and compare with OldManKamps' and check the fuel trims as PattyDuck suggested. That may also shed some light...

Fuel economy keeps INCREASING. Need help or ?

Finally... For some reason I could not post from my phone, via the website or Tapatalk... To recap the purpose of this thread: My fuel economy has been increasing and I am: 1. Concerned I may be harming the engine be somehow running too lean - although it has been going on long enough that...
