Bumping to add my photo links to my original question. My main point of confusion is that the line marked with blue up near the top of the radiator is marked with red down below at the transmission. I assumed the blue marking meant this was the output from the factory cooler in the radiator, and...

OK, trying again. The first attached file is showing the lines at the transmission, and the second is near the top of the radiator on the passenger side.

Wow, I did see that page in the manual but it wasn't clear to me at all what the outcome was supposed to be! I guess the short version for those who want to turn off the auto-lock would be "while parked, turn key to ON, press Lock button for five seconds, let go"

Just bought my 2017 Off Road and found a procedure posted on a dealer website that describes how to "reset" auto lock on a Corolla, so I thought I'd give it a try before purchasing a programming app or going the dealer route. It worked, with a tweak... after a few tries I realized "reset" means...
