Napkin math, if you intend to drive 500k miles on the power train, comparing the new model's fuel economy vs the old one's, at an average of $3/gal, the T2.4H would let you bank about $12000 by the time you hit 300K miles. Probably pays for a new block. And of course, the portion of 4Runner...

I've also had an episode where an aftermarket key properly added to the system, just randomly stopped working sometimes. Crank no fire situation as well.

I know the front brake caliper bolts changed... *mid year* 2016 model year (there are two different caliper castings on the market, 12 and 14 spec.)

The transfer case is manually activated. The front axle is electronically actuated once the transfer case is engaged manually (4WD icon blinking until the axle is engaged.)

NSS replacement was covered by Platinum Plan for me.
